Screen Rantinterviewed Clayton Neuman , Head of Franchise at AMC , and Jon Riva , Content Art Director at Sledgehammer Games forCall of Duty , to discuss the quislingism process , blending togetherCoDandWalking Deadcohesively , and the potentiality for next characters .

Clayton Neuman & Jon Riva On Call of Duty’s The Walking Dead Crossover

Screen Rant : I ’m really excited to speak about this integration . I think it ’s a really fun crossover and it feels especially apt timing - Stephen Samuel Wise with the upcomingZombiesadditions and that sort of matter . First I ’d bed to know just a little bit about how this quislingism started in the first place . What about the IP makes it a good fit for whatCall of Dutyis typically looking for in a crossing over ?

Clayton Neuman : Yeah , I ’d say that AMC has been eager to work with Activision for a while on Call of Duty . I mean there ’s a really strong thematic through line between the two properties , from the gamy realism to the epic scale leaf legions of die - hard fans .

You mentioned yourself Call of Duty ’s Zombie mode . And so I think with the liberation of Modern Warfare III and that Zombie mode aline very well with AMC , bring back two of its most iconic characters from The take the air Dead for this larger-than-life unexampled serial , The Ones Who Live . The timing just seemed perfect , and we were very emotional we were able to make it happen .

A Pair of Zombis from Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

And when it comes to design these in - game variation of the characters , does the endowment themselves have any say in that , a final approval of , " That ’s what I need to look like , " or is it more just on your end ?

Clayton Neuman : So Andy and Danai actually participate in 3D scans to create these model . They also immortalise the in - game duologue that you hear . So once they underwent the scan , and Jon can take the air through that appendage with you a minuscule bit , we talk over with them the look of the graphic symbol and everything .

When we thought we had the models in a good place , we shared them with Andy and Danai , and they throw their feedback . And finally , we ended up at a post where everybody loved them , and former indication is that the players do too .

Genshin Impact’s Shenhe and Mavuika pose next to each other.

Jon Riva : Yeah , the process , it was collaborative for indisputable , particularly with AMC and just the recipe that they have for all this character , designs , and costumes . They provided us with a band of material and then we go through it and feel what fits , what stands out , what ’s bespoke , and what ’s iconic . And then usually , we concept it very ahead of time and then bounce it back , and then we go through a few iterations , ‘cause they in the end understand the IP the most .

Then finally , we get the actors in there scan . We do like a multi - River Cam , so it feel substantial , it is who they are - that ’s very crucial to us . They do their own articulation line and then we end up with the final ware that you ’re seeing out there that ’s pretty much bang on ; what they were in the show is what they were in the biz , and I believe the audience loves it .

How long does that whole process take for you Guy , start to ending ?

Call of Duty versions of Rick Grimes holding and pointing a gun on the left and Michonne holding swords on the right.

Jon Riva : From a founding viewpoint , it ’s like a six - twenty-four hours week physical process . But it ’s not a linear line , it ’s like we ’re skim heads early , ‘cause we recognize it ’s going to be these two characters and we ’re doing representative lines . But in tandem , we ’re concepting on top of that . So I would say it ’s like a six - daylight week unconscious process overall from start to eat up and then with iteration on top of that .

And what ’s the reconciliation process between the two of you when it comes to something like this , where plain you need to create something that ’ll be really truthful forWalking Deadfans and really come across with them while simultaneously being cohesive with theCall of Dutyuniverse still ? How do you match those two things ?

Jon Riva : I can say that the walk Dead with its audience , with its achiever , with its yr of tangible - life integration fit Call of Duty really well . So it was very well-situated for us to be like , " Oh , this will work because it is very penny-pinching to our product . "

Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Mega Abomination Special Zombie Boss Attacking Player

So they ’re not grounded military soldiers and they ’re not fantastical MTX detail , but they are in the middle ground there and it fit really well . So it was very relatively comfortable to integrate this IP for sure . And I think it ’s noticeable that it feel like it ’s not out of place , it ’s not stand out . It feels like it ’s part of the world .

Clayton Neuman : Yeah . I would say it was really just a conversation between AMC and Activision , ongoing about what the needs are from Call of Duty , what our hard - line nos are for the brand , and finding those areas where we can thread that phonograph needle and create something that is recognizable to fans of the show and suits the needs of CoD and everybody is felicitous . And to Jon ’s dot , it was not a hard conversation . It was very open and collaborative , and we came at the veracious answer very easily .

And you said it ’s a somewhat smooth outgrowth . Were there any sort of amphetamine bumps or challenge you guy cable encountered in this collab ?

Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Farming XP Fast by Taking Out Zombie Horde on a Bridge

Jon Riva : No , it was awe-inspiring .

Clayton Neuman : I detest this guy , but - [ Laughs ] no , it was really great . I call back it was an idealistic partnership and something that would be good .

Jon Riva : Like Clayton said earlier , just the granulose realism , that sort of verse that they ’re in from The Ones Who last from The Walking Dead , it just fits really well . With the zombie desegregation , of course , it ’s a natural . But even without zombies it would still gibe inside of the CoDverse . So zombie was just like , " Oh , this feel like something we could really wager into . "

Farming XP in Modern Warfare 3 Zombies is different from past titles , with the monumental single-valued function providing new ways to best defeat waves of undead legion .

From the roadmap , there ’s moreZombiescontent that ’s planned for the plot in the thick of the time of year . Is there a prospect that some of those spillage overlap with this zombie - centrical crossover , or can you reveal that at all ?

Jon Riva : I ca n’t expose that at all . We ’ll have to wait and see .

And what do you think long - timeWalking Deadfans will appreciate the most about this crossing ?

Clayton Neuman : I think what we really tried to do , and Jon talked about it a little bit , was to check that that we include these iconic chemical element from each of the characters , and also look ahead at what ’s happening with The Ones Who Live . So I call up each of their wheeler dealer skin and parcel , they have blueprints for weapons that rooter will recognize . They come with vinyls and things like that that are iconic to the characters and reminiscent of sure moments in the series .

So I intend there are lots of little Easter eggs and thing like that that sports fan will appreciate . And then to Jon ’s early point , I reckon just how easily they fit into this world is something that they ’ll appreciate as well , and hopefully make them thirsty for more .

Is it possible that we ’ll see moreWalking Deadcharacters added in the future ?

Clayton Neuman : I ’d love to do that . We do n’t have anything to announce or anything like that . But surely , the Walking Dead universe is continue to develop and evolve . We ’ve buzz off three spin - off series now featuring devotee best-loved beloved iconic characters in these exciting new placement . And I think there are a flock of possibilities moving fore with next collaborations .

And you remark it ’s not just scanning the characters , putting them into the biz ; the actors have recorded phonation lines , and that form of thing . Do you experience that this crosswalk has in any way been capable to help further cement the narrative that you are hear to achieve with the new show ? Has it given any additional characterization or anything like that to these lead theatrical role ?

Clayton Neuman : I reckon everything that we taste to do in the gambling outer space and the interactive outer space is with a goal of broadening the universe in a meaningful way and not in any way sort of being disjoined from the universe . So we ’re always endeavor to expand that history and expand the experiences for our fans . So I imagine absolutely this match into that category of broaden the world of The walk Dead and hopefully the same for Call of Duty .

In terms ofCall of Duty , how do you feel like this has helped you iterate upon this raw time of year and impart Modern astuteness to it ?

Jon Riva : I do n’t know if it expanded on the time of year , but I think great partnership show in the game . And I think the partnership with AMC definitely show , because we managed to get the characters portrayed as we find like bear true to The Walking Dead , and then we cope to get them integrated into Call of obligation , so it feels seamless .

And I think that belike was the best part of this entire thing is : some things do n’t go well , some things do go well with partnership , and you’re able to see it in other game , you’re able to see it all over the world in the play - poetry . But this one just seemed to gel really well . And I retrieve at long last , when you verbalize about is there next stuff and nonsense , again , the family relationship that we ’ve work up is something that we both attend back on and we ’re like , " Yep , that was with child . It function out and we ’re seeing the rewards of that . "

And excluding the idea of concrete existent future plans , I ’m funny if you believe there are specific character that would mesh really well into theCoDuniverse fromThe Walking Deadcast that have n’t been contribute ?

Jon Riva : For me , I ’m a handsome fan of Daryl , Negan . I think of , the whole verse of walk idle fits of course into Call of Duty with the zombies part . But even without that , they are grounded , naturalistic character , beautiful stories built in reality , and I mean that ’s something that we have in Call of Duty . At least it ’s like a forward-looking world , right ? So it fits well , so I think any character would come in and be successful .

Clayton Neuman : Yeah , I agree with Jon , and I also agree with the picks he made .

The Walking Dead : Fear the Livingevent will begin inCall of Duty : Modern Warfare 3andCall of tariff : WarzoneFebruary 28 .
