The original ending forMarvel ’s Thunderboltswas reportedly going to be reasonably dark , but it would in reality have worked perfectly for one of its primal characters : Bucky Barnes . Bucky has had a unsmooth go of thing in theMCUso far , from nigh dying , to being brainwashed , to trying to cull up the piece after finally being freed from HYDRA ’s ascendance . Though he has seemingly been on the itinerary toward redemption sinceCaptain America : Civil War , his most recent visual aspect inthe MCU timelineprovedBucky still has a ways to go until he is in full redeemed .
Bucky ’s last MCU appearance was inThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier , and whileBucky is clear making advancement toward being a submarine , he still has some work to do . His next appearance will be inMarvel ’s Thunderboltswhere he might lead the teamof Marvel misfit . After all , Bucky has more experience than Yelena , and has a more layer heading than Red Guardian or John Walker , aka US Agent . Even if Bucky does n’t end up conduct the team , Marvel ’s Thunderboltscould be his path to redemption , and the film ’s original ending could have done that perfectly .

The Thunderbolts Reportedly Ended With The Team’s Deaths

This would sort of make sense , pass on the squad seems more or less under - powered to be lead up against the film ’s rumored baddie : Sentry . This type of ending would have been a major first for the MCU , and would likely have process as a direction to link up loose story threads that Marvel did n’t want hanging around as it transitioned into Phase 6 . However , this no longer seems to be the case , allot to fresh reports .
Joanna Calo of Netflix’sThe Bearhas since been institute on to work on a raw version of the handwriting forMarvel ’s Thunderbolts . Calo is the second major talent from the Netflix series to join the MCU of late , with starEbon Moss - Bachrach recently being put as Ben GrimminMarvel ’s Fantastic Four . Though what specific changes Calo will be making toMarvel ’s Thunderboltsis unclear , it does seem as though Marvel may be pivoting away from killing off the team . This may be to help future MCU plans align more with Bob Iger ’s program to rely more on sequels .
Marvel Has Failed To Redeem Bucky Properly
Though Bucky Barnes is no longer the villainous Winter Soldier , that does n’t mean he has been fully redeemed in the MCU yet . The Falcon and the Winter Soldiershows that Bucky has been trying to make amends to the menage of all the people he hurt while he was under HYDRA ’s control . This is a good concrete footprint toward Bucky set about substantially , but is also one that he is only truly getting started with by the end of the Disney+ serial publication .
Bucky has also yet to have a moment since being redeemed where he was prosecute a heroic endeavor strictly on his own volition . Joining the fighting inAvengers : Infinity WarandAvengers : Endgamewasn’t quite the major expansive decision that would work for this storyline , as the alternative was basically to let the entire world get destroyed .
Bucky is apparently more motivated inThe Falcon and the Winter Soldierby start Steve Roger ’s shield back to Sam Wilson than anything else . He even admits that a large ground for doing so is to shew Steve was right about Sam , and by prolongation rightfulness to believe in Bucky .

Before becoming the Winter Soldier , Bucky seemingly lay down his liveliness fighting for a imposing cause in World War II . This heroic sacrifice was then somewhat destroy when he was used as a deadly assassin by the very people he was trying to block . By allowing Bucky to make a expansive sacrifice inMarvel ’s Thunderbolts , the MCU would essentially have work him full circle back to his unmistakable death , this time having him actually die heroically instead of being rick into a baddie . This would institute Bucky ’s MCU journey full - lap to a hearty conclusion .
Though Bucky ’s larger-than-life decease would have been a very thematic way to complete his MCU redemption , that does n’t mean it ’s the only option Marvel has . If Bucky is being given a second term of a contract on life-time , then Marvel can show him put in the hard oeuvre to cease arrive at amends . This could even be more satisfying , as simply kill Bucky off might seem like letting him avoid doing the hard work necessary to make up for his past actions . Of course , Marvel ’s Thunderboltsmay still kill off Bucky and just dispense with the relaxation of the squad in the newfangled handwriting .
